Looks like the last blog entry for the construction was in September 2020! Well, we moved in at the end of July 2021. A long build but we are a LOT better off that people who have started construction since last year. Shipping delays, global supply chain problems, huge demand for new home have all conspired to make materials incredibly difficult, and expensive, to get. We heard today (December) that wallboard delays are up to 4 months, cedar is not available at all, weatherboard has quadrupled in price and steel the same. So we count ourselves very fortunate.
Let’s run through the time from September 2020 to today in pictures with some brief explanations. From this point onwards, we had a full-time team of three guys on site, two experienced joiners and a newly qualified apprentice. Other trades were called in as needed – electricians, plasterers, painters, plumbers, kitchen fitters etc.
The build team were incredible. Their attention to detail constantly amazed us. Although the build took almost 18 months we are can’t fault anything they did. Some examples of the level of workmanship was the framing, they trued the walls to within a 1/2 millimeter to ensure the plaster work was perfectly flat. The cedar weatherboard was all selected and sorted so that the best patterned planks were placed at the entrances and feature walls. The door handles on the interior doors were all installed at a non-standard height so they would match the handles on the European exterior doors. Nothing was too much trouble.
September and the windows and doors are going in. The builders attention to detail and patience getting everything right was incredible.
Cedar weatherboard being added to the outside along with cedar trim on the windows
Skylights installed and moisture barrier going in to the ceiling
Hardwood floors through the house

Final touches to the outside, leveling for the lawn
Well, that’s the build and move over. Now we are getting the garden sorted out. Of course, that’s a never ending task but we actually had fruit trees planted a year before we started the build. Linda has three raised veggie beds and we are slowly working through planting the other flower beds we put in. but that is probably a good subject for another page. Right now we want to get this one out and take a moment to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year, and may it bring you all health and happiness.

Thanks Sue! Hope you both had a lovely Christmas and new year. Christmas time on the beach in the middle of school summer holidays is different but fun. Right now I am sitting on the window seat enjoying the view and hoping we will start to see people out here this year.
